NEW CASTLE – Linda Diane Crawford Owens, 70, died July 14 at UPMC Jameson Hospital. She was surrounded by her relatives.
Mrs Owens was born on September 21, 1950 in New Castle to Leroy Crawford and Ethel Julia Tilden Crawford.
She attended Lawrence County Vocational Technical High School where she participated in many activities including public speaking for which she won first place in a speech competition.
As a young adult, she was active in the community organization Young Gifted and Black.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chewton, Pennsylvania.
She was the first African American to work for Universal Rundle.
She also worked for various other organizations including Liberty Mutual and Youth Development Center for which she worked for decades before retiring.
She has embarked on various entrepreneurial activities. As a serial entrepreneur, she enjoyed sales initiatives, most notably as a Tupperware consultant for over 20 years.
Mrs. Owens was a passionate and gifted seamstress and craftsman. In addition to sewing and crafts, she engaged in many other hobbies including board games, card games, saving money, and researching history and genealogy.
She loved to cook and was well known for her cookies, pies and other sweets. Many lined up for her famous Sweet Potato Pie, as she always “owed” a pie or two to family and friends who requested it.
She had a keen interest in African culture and heritage, appreciating an aesthetic and cultural events centered on Africa.
Linda was married to John Owens Sr.
She is survived by her husband; children Shauna Cox of Chicago, Michael Cox of New Castle, Renee Cox of New Castle, Chezelle Cox of Dallas, John Cox of New Castle, Fawn Cox of New Castle and Wesley Cox of New Castle; stepchildren John Owens of New Castle, Ray Owens of New Castle and Gladys Owens of New Castle; brothers John (Terri) Crawford of New Castle and Daryl Crawford of Washington, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Bryce, Daylin, Jamiya, Avary, Terrell, Kameron, Julian, Drew, Sheldon, Jaylan, Caden, Kai, Johnny, Takeo, Tautyauna, Sloan, Wesley, Cruise, Michael, Jasmine, Dalaysia, Darian, Mariah, Plane , Brandon and Torrence; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was a community elder who played the role of “mother” and “grandmother” for many.
Calling hours will be Tuesday (July 27) from 11 am to noon at J. Bradley McGonigle, Inc. Funeral and Crematorium, 111 W. Falls St., New Castle. A funeral service will begin at noon with Reverend Jamie Holmes and Reverend Sam Holmes officiating.
