Joe West and Mark Carlson plate referees for games with joker
Record-breaking umpire Joe West will call balls and holds for the NL wildcard match, and Mark Carlson will be the plate umpire for the AL wildcard match.
Ted Barrett, Tom Hallion, Sam Holbrook and Alfonso Marquez will be the Division Series team managers, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday.
West, who in May broke Bill Klem’s record for major league umpiring games, will be the team manager for Wednesday night’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be joined by Alan Porter at the start, Laz Diaz in second, Jim Wolf in third, Chris Segal on the left and Ramon De Jesus on the right.
Carlson will be joined on Tuesday night for the AL wild card game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox by James Hoye at the start, team manager Jerry Meals in second, Jordan Baker in third, Ryan Blakney at left and Jansen Visconti on the right.
Blakney, Visconti, Segal and De Jesus will make playoff games for the first time.
Stu Scheurwater and Larry Vanover will be the replay officials for the wildcard matches.
Dan Bellino will be the plate umpire on Thursday for the AL Division series opener between Tampa Bay and the winner of the wild card, joined by DJ Reyburn at the start, Holbrook at the second, Ron Kulpa at the third, Greg Gibson on the left and Brian Knight on the right.
Adam Hamari will serve as the plate umpire for Thursday’s AL Division Series opener between Houston and the Chicago White Sox, joined by Chris Conroy at the start, Hallion at second, Vic Carapazza at third, Chad Fairchild at left and Lance Barrett at right.
Carlos Torres will serve as the plate umpire for Friday’s NL Division Series opener between San Francisco and the wild card winner, joined by Ángel Hernandez at the start, Barrett in second, Pat Hoberg in third, Doug Eddings on the left and Gabe Morales on the right. Hernandez lost his racial discrimination lawsuit against MLB in May.
Mike Estabrook will serve as the plate umpire for the NL Division Series opener on Friday between Milwaukee and Atlanta, joined by Mike Muchlinski at the start, Marquez in second, Tony Randazzo in third, Will Little on the left and Quinn Wolcott on the right .
CB Bucknor, Fieldin Culbreth, Chris Guccione and Adrian Johnson will be the Division Series replay officials.
