Dustbiters: Take-That Car Warfare board game review
Dustbiters is a small vehicle combat card game currently on Kickstarter, and there’s a lot of strategy in these 21 maps.
Dust is a fast paced vehicle combat card game where two players push, shove and destroy their way to the front of the line. Created by a collaboration of the independent video game developers who were behind Minit, Record room, and Genital jousting, Dust is a simple game that manages to incorporate a lot of strategy into its 21 maps.
the Dust the theme is reminiscent of the apocalypse movie Mad Max. Players each control a convoy of vehicles that move away from a giant dust storm, and at the end of each turn, the car in the back will be destroyed. The objective of Dust is either to have control of every vehicle on the board, or simply to be the last car standing. The game begins with eight cars lined up, four on each side, and each turn grants the player three action points which can be used to move, draw new cards, place a card on the row, or activate the special power of a car. Throughout the game, players will compete for position while trying to steal or destroy the other player’s cards.
Each of the 21 cars of Dust has its own unique special power, and this is where the game’s strategy really shines. Some examples: the teleporter can swap positions with any other car, the hijacker can steal another player’s car, and the jammer can completely disable special powers from another car. Each card is unique and the players both draw from the same deck, Dust creates a fun and fast-paced card game that players will want to play over and over again. There is a powerful combo system built into the game, as many cards play off each other to create devastating attacks. Even if the game seems lost, a perfect turn can quickly change the momentum.
Art in Dust harmonizes effortlessly with its theme, as each car has a simple cartoon quality that doesn’t overwhelm the map but expresses some of the character of the vehicle and the mechanics behind it. The color scheme used gives the impression of a dusty old desert, and the map-sized manual spells out the rules well while maintaining the theme. The small footprint of the box makes it easily portable and the game can be played almost anywhere there is a flat surface. Dust is great for travel and lasts just long enough to sneak into a game anytime.
With the huge miniatures games plaguing Kickstarter and board game costs constantly rising, it’s nice to find a simple, well-designed game that packs a lot of strategy into a small box. Cards and packaging from Dust are of high quality and will easily withstand multiple games. The box also allows the cards to be sleeved while easily fitting into the insert. There is nothing overproduced in Dust bites – it is a well balanced and enjoyable 15 to 20 minute card game that will easily make players want to play “one more time”.
